Our dog seems to have some intestinal pain and recently chewed and ate a rawhide bone. She had some other symptoms as well, such as a little bit of drool and her eyes were watering, but only for a short period of time.

Rawhide is made with glue, which is why some dogs with sensitive stomachs cannot handle it. Try real bones (as in, you can tell which part of the animal it came from). They even make some with tasty fillings where the marrow used to be. Our pups love those. Pigs ears are similar to rawhide in texture, but much better for them.

Yes, rawhide bones can be dangerous because they can be swallowed in large pieces and cause blockages or stomach upsets. Because rawhide bones are often an entire piece of twisted or knotted hide, a dog can chew until the hide is softened and then swallow it in one long piece this is dangerous because it can cause blockages due to the highly indigestible nature of rawhide... it takes a long time to be digested in large pieces and dogs have a very fast metabolism.. so it moves too fast from the stomach to the intestine while still mostly indigested thus causeing pain, blockage, diarrhea, stomach upset and even vomiting and nausea. It still puzzles me why they even sell such a dangerous type of chew for dogs as my vet has informed me that rawhide is the #1 cause of blockages in dogs and reccommended I do not feed it to my dogs.

Make sure to keep an eye on your dog and see if she has a normal bowel movement and if she shows and lethargy, loss of appetite or seems to be in pain you should take her to your vet.

In the future I would reccommend chews that are less hazardous such as smoked natural bones, Wowser stuffed marrow bones and chew toys such as Nylabones, or Kong... all of these chews are safer than rawhide, the natural bones do not splinter and have real meat on them, the stuffed marrow bones cnat really be chewed up and can be refilled with a filling of your choice, and both the kong and nylabone inedible toys cannot be eaten in large pieces by your dog no matter how hard they try.

Sometimes dogs can bite off a piece that is too large and swallow it. Excessive drooling is a good indication that she has a problem with something she has swallowed. If she is still in discomfort tomorrow I would take her to the vet, get an xray - just to be on the safe side. This happened to a workmates puppy last week & he got his dog checked by the vet, though he was complaining about the emergency room charge, he'd rather be safe than sorry :)

I think you might want to get your dog to a vet. Rawhide bones can be bad because the can casue a blockage intestine. If your dog is having problems i could be pretty serious.

I dont know the size of your dog but an ankle biter dont need a supersized raw hide. Now the speed of injestion matters too. If it eats it too fast it can cause distress. If the pain dont stop Dont feed him anymore. Try Pig ears. If the same thing happens then your dog is eatting too fast and you need to slow him down.

Do this by taking it away. and letting him rest. return it too him showing him that if you take it away that you will give it back. This may calm that feast or famon trait. If you can slow him down stop giving him both. The intestinal pain is not worth you dogs life. feed him dry treats.

How recently was that? I was worried the other day about a similar problem, and the vet told me that if the dog was Ok for 72 hours, he was out of danger. But your dog seems not OK? Did he throw up? Does he poop OK or does he diarrhea or no pooping at all? He could be just sick from another reason, but it's better to check with the vet anyway.

My dogs have eaten these for years and the only problem I had (which was the other day) and I was lucky to be at home, A piece of rawhide got caught in her throat and I had to put my fingers down her throat to get it out.

I've heard rawhides are bad news for some dogs. I haven't had a problem with them with my dogs, I also get rid of them when they're close to the end because they're a choking hazzard. Do your dog a HUGE favor, call the vet, I've heard horror stories, hate to see your dog become another statistic!

Don't give the raw hide. Our dog ended up having to have surgrey to remove blockage from his intestines. The vet said never give raw hide because when the dog chews it, it gets real soft, but as it makes its way through the dog it gets hard again and causes blockages. And can have shrap edges that can cut.

okay i know this for a fact cuz i did an experiment with this. when a rawhide gets wet it can swell up to between 3 and 5 times its normal size.it could rupture your dogs stomach. even if your dog seems like its not in pain anymore you need to get it to a vet as soon as you can.
