My girlfriend and i are trying to save £5000 for our new home, everytime we get close to it she sees something in the shops she wants to buy, we have £4600 sitting in the bank but now the bloody january sales have started she wants to withdraw £750 to spend on clothes. It's the same story every time we get close to our £5000 she takes out a good few hundred to go shopping, we'll never get a deposit at this rate, any ideas how to stop her withdrawing our money?

It sounds like she is uneasy about the whole moving in thing and might be looking for excuses and ways of stopping it going ahead. You definitely need to sit down and have a serious and honest conversation about it.

It might also be worth moving the money to an account where it needs both signatures for withdrawing and maybe even some notice before money can be taken out. Speak to your bank and see what they can suggest. They may be able to put this sort of thing in place on your existing accout you have now so you wont have to mess around moving the money.

Talk is the first thing though. Get to the bottom of it. See if there's doubts. It is a big step after all.

Good luck,

Threaten to burn all of her current clothes if she does it again - I know THAT would make me think twice! Seriously though, if she thinks clothes are more important than your future, are you sure she's as willing to take the relationship further as you are?

I don't wanna judge, but seriously - I'm a shopaholic, but I'd deprive myself of the latest fashion temporarily if it meant moving in with the guy I loved permanently. You should talk to her seriously about it, and you need to give her some kid of an ultimatum to show her its not a joke, its a real problem!

it's possible that the fault is yours; you may have failed to make her grasp the numerous advantages of not withdrawing until you got over and done with the deposit. Perhaps you should get somebody more experienced to explain her the details (theory and practice) of the fruits of not withdrawing etc.. I suggest your bank manager .....and i am sure she will thank him for it. And you may also learn how to convince her in the process.

Firstly - I've got to say that your question headlines are the best ones on this entire site!!

And secondly, assuming that this is a genuine question, show her some of the cracking tips on www.moneysavingexpert.com - you'll find tons of stuff from genuine people out there who are all trying to help each other to save money. There are some great ways to find the incentive to knuckle down & save; and avoid the temptation of the January sales.

Good luck - and thanks for making me smile (",)

Talk to your girlfriend ragarding this, and show your concern, as property is a real asset, land/property is very valuable, worth more than clothes, as they go out of fashion faster than you can say Lee Cooper.
Explain to her that if she carries on taking money out, then you will ask the bank to not allow any money out of that savings account

Allow some money for the things she wants and explain to her that only a certain amount can be spent on shopping and a certain amount must be put in savings for your home. And if she doesn't get it, you may look closer at purchasing a home with someone who doesn't understand or prioritize their money.

Kind of makes you wonder if she even wants to commit a long term thing like buying a house with you. Be firm, put your foot down and tell her no. If she wants something so bad, tell her to work the extra overtime at work to get it. Your future is more important than buying something that's temporary. Houses are forever.

it sounds like she cant deal with money, so comprimise. Agree a certain amount to deposit and a certain amount to spend and agree not to make any big purchases. It sounds like she's being a bit selfish wanting to blow £750 on cloths rather than helping to prepare for your future.

HAhahahah, Funny, funny. good luck man.
Just do like I did, put your foot down. Then in 6 months you'll find out that you have a credit card that you didn't know about, in your name only, and have 2x the debt that you wouldn't let her spend in the first place. Love is a many splendor thing my friend.
