If the 19-year old is not a full-time student and earned more than $3300 then you cannot claim him. If he is not a full-time student, earned less than $3300, did not support himself, and lived with you all year then you can claim him.

If the 19 year old is a full-time student then you can claim him even if his income is over $3300.

If he earned money in 2006 he should file in order to get back his withholding even if he is not required to file. So in any case, he should file.

If you go to irs.gov there are frequently asked questions on many topics. You can also search the site for answers.

You can usually find your answers on irs.gov. You can also call the irs, but plan to be on hold awhile before somebody gets to you.

I'm assuming in my answer that he's your son - if not, the rules might change some depending on his relationship to you. If he was not a full time student for some part of at least five months of the year, then you can't claim him since he's over 18.

If he was a full time student, then maybe you can claim him - that depends partly on where he lived and for how long, and whether he provided over half of his total support for the year. This could get a little complicated.

Depending on how much he made in 2006, he might or might not be required to file. If he's not required to but had anything deducted, he should file to get his withholding back. If you're eligible to claim him, then he needs to check the box on his return to say he's a dependent, and will not get his personal exemption (you'd get that) but would still get his standard deduction.
