I have seen and test driven a car from a private seller who is in my town, and I've decided to buy it. But I don't have any clue what steps should I take. Do I need to pay taxes? Do I need to register the car somewhere? How to get a title? Insurance?

Sorry that happened, must have sucked:/ I think a private seller is a thousand times better, but before buying the car from that seller, check it. I suggest taking someone that knows about cars and the way they should work. Have that person check it, ask the seller if you can test run it. That way you'll know for sure if the car is okay. Good luck:)

Both You and the Seller should go to the DMV and fill out the title transfer there. You may have to pay taxes (depends on the year of the vehicle & selling price)
There will be a title fee & a regitration fee.
If you are getting new plates, the Liscense, Title & registration fees will be $143.00, if you have plates that you want to transfer to this vehicle , the fees will be $80.00. That is assuming that the sticker (on plate ) has not expired. You need to bring I.D. with you & also the current registration card (that goes with the plates you're transfering)
Make sure the seller gives you a receipt, or bill of sale for the vehicle.
You will also have to bring proof of insurance with you.

Note: Buyer Beware!!!!, the seller does not have to disclose anything at all to you about the condition or history of the vehicle.
Please pay the $20 for a Carfax history & have a qualified inspection done BEFORE you buy. There is NO LEMON LAW on used vehicles & NO RIGHT TO RESCIND. Once you buy it it is YOURS. .....Un conditionally! Even if the seller makes promises (verbally or in writing), they mean ABSOLUTELY NOTHING!
( the note above is one of the main reasons why people prefer to buy used cars from a reputable (new) car dealer, who can handle all the paperwork for you)
Good luck & enjoy your "new to you" car!

Purchasing a car from a private seller is risky. When you buy a car from somone you are buying what could possibly be their headaches. You have to get insurance to get the car registered.
You have to get the title from them the DAY you give them the cash for the car. Replacement titles may be given out by your local DMV. Get on your DMV website to have MOST of the questions you have answered about owning & registering the car. Have a trust worthy mechanic put the car on a lift to see if there are any damages to the under carriage of the car...or any welding has been done...whether the car has been in an ACCIDENT prior to your purchase. Best of luck on your purchase!
