Been there...losing the weight!
Walk, if you are overweight its the easiest exercise to day. It works on all major muscle groups without overdeveloping any one. Often overweight people are quite weak and going into a full blown, full on exercise routine could be damaging to your health. Get a pedometer and build up the walking to 10,000 steps a day. Once you are there you can start building up speed and distance. It is working for me, along with the GI Diet by Rick Gallop;

Back pain can be caused or made worse by being overweight, so it's important to get out of the cycle. Start out walking for 20 minutes..everyday...work up to 30 then 40 minutes. When you comfortable with that try light jog run for a few minutes at the beginning of you walk and at the end...just add a minutes or two each time. Swimming is very good but you may not have access to a pool or its too cold out. Lifting weights is very good for weight loss but you should use a waist belt to help with possible strain...you don't have to lift very heavy, many reps with light weight will work well in the beginning.

If you have the $ a personal trainer is the best and may be worth it for just 1 or 2 sessions. Cut back on all fried food and candy, get some veggies & fruit everyday and Good Luck!

Oh my I know what that's like. I'm in the midst of trying to lose weight and exercising by using baby steps because I'm so out of shape. Doing water exercises is excellent. It's better when done in a group setting with a teacher though.

I just recently purchased a chair stepper. It's a stepper that you use while sitting. It's best for overweight to grossly obese people that have a hard time doing regular walking. It is already helping too. Try doing isometric exercises for your abdomen. You've probably seen people hold their stomach in. Well, just do that to the count of ten as many times as possible. That's even good for your back. It relieves some of the pain.

Check out your local library for videos or dvds of chair exercises. Those are excellent!

After doing these types of exercises for a while, you will probably feel more up to moving on to other kinds of exercises.

Is the pain from an injury or surgery or both? If that is the cause you should be asking your doctor this question. If it is just your run of the mill back pain due to strain, then take some advil and do some low-impact exercise. Swimming is the best, but walking is great too. My back used to hurt but as soon as I started exercising regularly it stopped.

A really good strategy is to start by doing workouts in a swimming pool, standing about chest deep in the water. Do exercises where you do lifts starting under the water, and going easy-does-it above the water line. Stand with feet gently spread;
if you get floaty, step up to where you are standing a little higher in the water. One really good exercise in this setting is to hold small weights in both hands and then to gently turn left and right at the waist. Don't overturn... keep your balance at all time. This will a little at a time strengthen the lower back by allowing it to redistribute weight.

This has worked wonders for many people in your position.

swimming is the most obvious answer--no impact on the back and may actually help. You need to determine the cause of the pain. Your doctor may have ideas. There's walking, swimming, stationary cycling--anything that raises your metabolism. It's quite possible that the extra weight is what's causing the back pain. Go slowly but regularly. Checkinto Atkins as well.

It depends on what's causing the pain. Exercises to strengthen your back muscles might help, though.

Another thing you can try is swimming (if you can find an indoor pool): The water helps bear some of the weight and will help keep you from overheating.

Good luck!

before you start an exercise regime, consult a doctor.
after that perhaps google sitting exercises. those will not cause strain on the lower back and are a good thing to use to ease back into exercise.

good luck and congrats on wanting to do this!
