From 1965-1975, 58,000 lives were lost .. an average of 5,800 per year. That does not take into consideration those listed as MIA, or those who lost their lives later from complications of injuries or from Agent Orange. The draft was started during the Civil War and lasted to the end of Vietnam. The men and women who have lost their lives since then volunteered to defend all our freedom. Say a prayer of thanks for their courage and remember Freedom isn't Free.

It was around 58,000. I was alive and well during the Vietnam war and a teen. I knew of men getting shipped off to Okinawa and then off to Vietnam. We lost so many men because it was a "different war" than we ever fought. Our men were not trained in jungle war where they had to kill kids and women or be killed. You had "gooks" jumping out of home, trees, gullys, and such shooting you. Vietnam Vets can tell you how many men, women and children they had to kill and how it affected their lives forever. The Vietnamese had a different style of fighting and so we lost many fine young men. It was a ten year war that we could not get out of. The US was afraid to cut and run since the North Vietnamese Communists would take-over the South. We wanted to keep the South free of them. Why? Ask Presidents Nixon and Johnson.
Now once again, we are in a similar war in Iraq. This is an unconventional war. Our men are fighting men who are not afraid to die. If you have no fear of dying you can kill large groups of soldiers. If you feel Allah wants you to do the killing for his sake you can kill even more. This war is unconventional because our troops are operating in Guerilla Warfare (fighting in cities and buildings and streets). Our troops were not prepared for this type of war. We expected to kill the insurgents with out bombs but instead many more took their place and are bombing us in the cities and rural road. Our Army and Marines are trained to fight the enemy in the open not hiding in cars, builidings and rubish.
That is the main reason we lost so many. Once again it is hard for our troops to distinguish the good Iraqis from the Bad Iraqis. How do you know who is good and bad unless they have a gun pointed at you? Instead they have bombs strapped to their backs.
My son who is an Army commander and just got home from Iraq told me much. He had to order kids shot for having bombs strapped to them or for gunning down our soldiers. Now he is coping with making these decisions. It is not easy to kill.
We need to get out as this year and let the Iraqs take back their country. We need them to ask for help from the surronding Arab countries. If they all work together they can keep the insurgents out. And I am sure our tax dollars will be sent there for the next ten years. But we can not afford to lose any more lives. We need our troops home to protect our borders.

well you need to look at the history of the war. I think you should go to DC and look at the wall. You;ll see that 58,000 names are on it. Don';t compare this war with Vietnam.

Around 58,000 killed, 300,000 wounded. However peak deployment was about 550,000 soldiers and 2.7 million soldiers served in Vietnam.

58,000 plus or minus
I see someone blaming Vietnam on Nixon and Ford....But wasn't it Kennedy who got us into it, and Johnson who expanded it??? Funny how people forget history.
