My rat terrier/chihuhua wentin to heat on Dec. 8, 2006. Its now the new year. Today she wont eat or drink and is attacking my new pup. Vets not open today. Thought about paging him. She really has me worried cause she seems to be bleeding heavier. Does anyone know if this is normal for a small breed or should i page the vet?

She has been in heat a little over 3 weeks. That is normal. How old is she? If she is an older dog, she may have a pyometra, a uterine infection. Better take her to an emergency vet just to make sure she is okay.

Female dogs in heat.... The first 8 or 9 days they can't get pregnant, the next about week they can, and then after that they bleed, it lasts about 21 days or so. So if she started on the 8th, she should be finished or about finished, but if she's done today, its not that much of a concern.

Attacking the puppy could have nothing to do with being in heat, puppy could be trying to hump her, lick her or be in her general space. Dogs in heat have little patients for puppies which are not their own. She could be pregnant; has she finished bleeding? If not 9 chances out of 10 she's pregnant.

If she went in heat could have sparked puppy to be sexually matured faster and now they could be competing for top dog position.

Don't ruin your vets holiday. Waiting until the office is open and if you don't know more about taking care of an unfixed animal, find them new homes or be responsible and have them done.

I don't want to preach to you but if you don't want puppies, its much healthier for you dogs to be spayed. They're much more prone to certain cancers (breast), plus uterus infections which can be fatal if not taken care of ASAP. If its $ usually counties or shelters will offer some sort of discount deal. Discuss benefits of spaying/not spaying with your vet.

If you have an animal emergency room get her there now and tell them what is going on. They will know what to do.

She should be spayed. Plus you have a pup? Hope you spay/neuter that one too.

Page the vet.
