Nail polish is pretty toxic for your nails,
it would be worse for your skin.
Try some OTC ward remover or a pad you can leave on your skin.

Home remedy:

INGREDIENTS: Greater Celandine, a plant which is found by the roadside, on untilled land and in meadows.
INSTRUCTIONS: My daughter had many warts on her hands and after trying all possible over the counter and home remedies, we looked in a herbal book for help.This plant has orange/red sap in the stem which we applied sparingly to her warts. Amazingly, after only two applications, the warts disappeared!

It can but your better off getting the wart remover-because suffocating the wart with nail polish can lead to a very dry spot where the wart comes off and it could return

I have heard it does but never used it myself, I bit my wart off over a period of a few months, not recommended but it worked;
