Get the Canon. It allows user control of aperture and speed (once you know what those things are for) and the Nikon does not. It has 3 choices for metering patterns and the Nikon only has one "average" meter setting. This WILL make a difference to you someday.

The BIGGEST reason, though, is that the Canon has an optical viewfinder and the Nikon does not. LCD monitors used as viewfinders eat batteries like crazy. If you don't believe me, just read a couple of pages of questions here and see how many people are asking, "Why does my camera go through batteries so fast?" There are other reasons, but that alone is enough for your decision.

Buy the Canon.

There is no need for any confusion or second thoughts here. Betweent those two by a Mil Canon A710 is a much better camera. Take it from me.
