1. The dogs will be playing with each other and will require less attention from you, they won't be bothering you all the time, they'll have another dog for that. They will also be less spoiled than an only-dog (it is like an only child sometimes).
2. Two similar pets don't require more effort and work than one, because they will be fed together, walked together, etc. It's not like doubling the trouble, it's the same or less than having one dog.
3. You'll be rescuing an animal, which is a good thing to do since you can, I mean you are obviously capable of having dogs since you already have one!
4. Promise (an keep the promise) that you will be responsible for the dogs, you will walk them and bathe them and feed them.

I'd tell them that dogs are pack animals and that having a canine companion will mentally benefit your current dog. Also, because the new dog is coming from a shelter, you'll be giving the dog a second chance at a happy life as well as freeing up space at the shelter for another stray dog that might have otherwise been euthanised due to lack of space.

Offer to do all or some of the chores she will require, and help out more with your current dog. Bring your terrier to the pound to meet the chihuahua (if they allow this) to make sure that they get along. And thumbs up for going to a shelter!

Do youi take care of the one dog? If you don't then there is no way they will get you another one. Just rememer 2 dogs are twice the work. Take care of the dog you have, do other chores around the house to show how responsible you are. Then you may get the chihuahua.

If your terrier is acting like he is lonely tell them that not only will they be giving him a playmate but they will be doing something that is very beautiful and wonderful: saving the life of a dog that may be put down otherwise and giving her a chance at a happy and LOVING home!

Good luck and great way to start off the new year!!!!!!!!!!

Is the fox terrier *your* dog or the family dog? If it is the family dog let them know you want a dog of your own... We always had an aloof family dog growing up and I really wanted a chihuahua of my own since 5th grade. When I was in about 7th grade they finally broke down and let me rescue a chihuahua, who was my companion until college when he passed away :(
Usually what it comes down to is reassuring them of your responsibility and that you wont get bored of it and they wont end up being the ones to take care of it... thats the BIG one for parents.

Take more responsibiliy for your Terrier. They will be very impressed, then do more chores around the house. Finally, tell them about this animal shelter and this cute dog that need more people willing to buy the animals. Tell them you want to help. I hope that helps.

your responsibility level will definitely count towards getting a new dog. ask yourself: do i take care of the dog i have now? do my parents do half of the work of taking care of my dog? if you take responsibility for your pet, and you always have, then your parents won't be as wary of you getting a new one. if you aren't the responsible type, try to do more chores around the house, and do your chores without having your parents to nag you to do them. also, take full responsibility for your pet, and don't let anybody else take care of the dog. continue to take care of your first pet even if you get your second one so you won't be marked as un-responsible. also, point out to your parents that chihuahuas are very small and easy to take care of, tote around, and easy to clean up after, since they aren't heavy, big dogs-and that they are totally cute!!!
