I don't see any source of power given to achieve these steps.
If it is a full reliance on the Holy Spirit of God who dwells within us, then well and good.
If this freedom is to be achieved by our will power or anything that we can boast about of ourselves, then there is no value in the steps.
John 15:5-8
5 "I am the vine; you are the branches. If a man remains in me and I in him, he will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing. 6 If anyone does not remain in me, he is like a branch that is thrown away and withers; such branches are picked up, thrown into the fire and burned. 7 If you remain in me and my words remain in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be given you. 8 This is to my Father's glory, that you bear much fruit, showing yourselves to be my disciples.

The 12 steps is a process for anyone in life but mostly used in AA. They help a person get back in control of their life if they are willing. If they find their higher power along the way the more "power" to them. The Serenity Prayer is part of this process also. "God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, courage to change the things I can and the wisdom to know the difference.

Why 12? Which God are YOU referring to? (Must be something to do with mathmatics) The bible has 12 dudes partying, 7 days of the week, multitudes(which sounds like lots) and 666 bingo numbers I guess.

I thought that surrendering yourself to a higher power was one of the steps--or are you not talking about AA?

yes I think so
Hebrews 11:6
But without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is, and that He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him.
the first step to faith is believing there IS a Higher Power
the next step is trying to Find out who He is
Matthew 7:8
For everyone who asks receives, and he who seeks finds, and to him who knocks it will be opened.

Which God? It only talks about a higher power when it should talk about Jesus.
