Also I cannot get Windows Media Player. Being trying to solve this for months, but this is so complicated for us oldies who have come late to new technology, but I would really like to learn more. I would really appreciate any help and advice. I am running AVG anti-virus, AVG Spyware , Spybot S&D, P.C. on Point ,& Ad-Aware

It sounds like your IE files might have been corrupted. I recommend re-install both IE and Windows Media Player (WMP). But, first, you need to uninstall IE and WMP files that are already on your computer. Go to Start menu > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs > Add/Remove Windows Component (left side panel) > select IE and WMP > [Remove] > Reboot.

Once you are ready, create a system restore point by Start menu > Help and Support > Undo changes to your computer with system restore > create a system restore point > enter a name > [O.K.] > [Close]. Afterwards, download:

1. IE 7 (http://www.filehippo.com/download_internet_explorer/)

2. WMP 11 (http://www.filehippo.com/download_windows_media_player/)

Since you are going to install both programs anyway, you might as well install the latest versions. This should solve your problems. If not, drop me an e-mail for other options. I should warn you that you might end up having to re-install Windows XP. But, don't worry, you can re-installing Windows XP without destroying any of your data.

It sounds like you either have some corrupt DLL files in your Windows install directory, a malware issue, or a configuration issue.

If you can get to the internet without the browser (open a command line and ping an internet site: "ping yahoo.com") then the issue is with the browser.

Using the Run command, start the browser by typing "iexplore.exe". The browser will attempt to open. This will bypass the shortcut, which could also the the issue.

If this fails to work, then it might be an issue with Windows DLL files. You should reinstall Windows XP SP2.

If all else fails, take the computer to a qualified service tech and have them reinstall SP2.

When booting press f8 to enter safe mode. If this boots OK then go to start run and type sfc /scannow this will scan windows and attempt to replace any missing system files.

If this doesn't work you can also boot your windows CD and do a repair install. This will reinstall the standard files without losing your data.

you could try installing Firefox (prefered by many to IE), available on many magazine cd/dvds . this will allow you to get to microsoft to download IE and WMP rather than having to do a full Windows install.

Note that you cant use the standard automatic windows update via firefox but will have to manually search for the items you need, its not difficult just more annoying!

Another option once Firefox is online is to download Autopatcher (www.autopatcher.com). this is a large download but contains IE7, WMP11 and many other bits n pieces as well as all windows updates.

It sounds like your computer can't find the IE files, so its trying to create temporary ones. Unfortunately, if you can not download the files from "http://Microsoft.com", you are most likely going to have to reformat if you really would like these features. Try asking this question on a technical forum if you do not feel confident.
