The Encyclopedia Americana explained: “Most of the customs now associated with Christmas were not originally Christmas customs but rather were pre-Christian and non-Christian customs taken up by the Christian church. Saturnalia, a Roman feast celebrated in mid-December, provided the model for many of the merry-making customs of Christmas. From this celebration, for example, were derived the elaborate feasting, the giving of gifts, and the burning of candles.”
Regarding the custom of gift giving, the journal History Today noted: “The giving of presents at the midwinter feast almost certainly began as a magical more than as merely a social custom. Saturnalia presents included wax dolls, given to children. A charming custom, no doubt, by times of record, but with a macabre past: even contemporaries thought this probably a vestige of human sacrifice, of children, to aid the sowing.”

the bible first of all, does not give the amount of wise men that came to jesus. second, the wise men were not worshippers of God. they did go to worship jesus but as jesus himself said (later in life not as a baby) in Matthew, "thou shall worship the Lord thy god, and him ONLY thou serve." Chrismas is based on a pegan holiday where they gave gifts in the winter. Jesus was not born on Dec. 25th. It is not backed up from the bible. Jesus never gave gifts or celebrated his birthday. As Christians (followers of Christ and the bible) neither should we.

Because someone loved us enough to give.
2) Why do we give?
Because we love enough to give.
3) Why did Jesus give Himself to us?
Because He loved us enough to give Himself.
4) Why did God agree to this crazy plan?
Because He loved us enough to give us Jesus.

I don't think anyone has met Jesus face to face in a long time to give him a birthday gift, so we give each other gifts instead.
