I absolutely love New Orleans! I grew up in Mississippi and spent many, many weekends partying in New Orleans. I am extremely familiar with the city and encourage any and everyone to experience Mardi Gras at least once in their life. Unfortunatley, after the floods, New Orleans has become overly crime ridden and is extremely unsafe at this time. Most businesses are back up and running but there are mutliple murders and crimes there daily right now. My advice would be to wait until next year to attend Mardi Gras. I have never been afraid to spend time in New Orleans and I spent many Saturday nights in the French Quarter back in the early to mid '90's when the crime level was very high. But with the way things are there now, I would not want to be out at night there for something like Mardi Gras, especially if you are not familiar with the city.

Get a room NOW, at the Inn on Bourbon. It's a Best Western hotel, reasonably priced for Bourbon st. I suggest you ease into it if you can. The quarter is packed nearly every night, and during Mardi Gras, there's barely room to breath. Don't were anything you don't want ruined you WILL be soaked with beer. Have fun.

After the flood I don't know what is still there I lived there in the 80's and could have told you of all the great places but I don't know anyone that has gone after the flood. I heard rumors that it is very small now compared to how it used to be. It had been a week long party they even passed the King Cake for a week when my son was in the Early elementary at the school. That is something we did for a long time after coming back to Michigan. There the person that get the baby in their piece of cake would bring it the next day. We ordered them for years after coming back. It was fun a parade almost every day or night.

trust me.. theres a lot of action .. i went to the french quarter last year and it was pretty active. So was LAST NIGHT for New Years EVE ! WOOT ! Hurricane Katrina deff did not kill the spirit of New Orleans
well.. as for hotels i really dont know.. since i'm a local .. i've never stayed in any down here. As for costumes.. just go to the local shops and see what you like. last year.. i worn this HUGE afro wig that was purple and gold .. the mardi gras colors.. and mardi gras suspenders.
Theres all kinds of parades .. for adults.. and family .. daytime and night time.. to keep track of the parades go to http://www.mardigras.com/
Hope you enjoy your stay and

If you can get a room with a balcony on Burbon St. that would put you in the middle of it all..
Come on down.
