I heard that most domestic flights on American you have to
pay for snacks. On overseas flights American is looking into
paying for a hot meal.
I do not know about United serving meals still.
I remember you use to get good meals depending on
what time of day you were flying.
Now days it is just beverage service.

For international flights, they do... I haven't heard of it changing but I wouldn't be surprised if it does. And in First Class for a few really long domestic flights as well. They now only give free nonalcoholic drinks and those tiny little bags of pretzels. They don't even serve hot meals at all on most flights though - they charge for like a box with a nasty turkey sandwich or a "snack pack" with a bunch of junk food. Many airlines have even taken the heating units for food out of the galleys of their planes.

I do remember when they served meals on airplanes - it was kinda cool. I even have 6 porcelain serving dishes from Eastern Airlines, engraved with their logo. Although, it is interesting - the complaint now is that airlines don't serve food at all - but ten or fifteen years ago the complaint was that airlines serve bad food. So, I don't know which is worse... bad food or no food, haha. Besides, for a 2 hour flight, that's not during a normal meal time, being fed is sort of an unnecessary expense. However for a long flight I do miss having food. Anyway, I digress. I love flying and used to love it even more, haha.

You can also check the airlines websites they generally mention their meal policies on their websites.

Most airlines are cutting costs by not providing more than a beverage and snack service. There are some flights that still offer an inflight meal, however, it depends on the destination. American I did hear offers the option of paying for a meal. However, most people usually carry a sandwich with them on the plane. Your best bet is to research the airline online and that usually tells you what meal options are available.

The majority of the airlines, including some of the majors, no longer offer free meals on domestic flights. The policy of BYO (bring your own or buy your own) isn't a new one, but options vary among the airlines.

American Airlines
American Airlines offers individually packaged snacks for $3 each and bottled water for $2 on U.S. and Canadian flights that are two hours or longer. On flights over three hours, sandwiches and wraps are also available for $5. "Snack packs" are available for $4 on American Eagle and AmericanConnection flights in the continental U.S., Canada, Mexico and the Caribbean.

Complimentary meals are offered on Caribbean, Europe, Latin America, Japan and some Mexico flights longer than four hours within traditional breakfast, lunch and dinner meal windows.

You can purchase meals at the gate before boarding at the Dallas/Fort Worth (DFW) and San Juan SJU) airports.
------
United
United's "Buy Onboard" test program features food from Bennigan's, Hard Rock Café and TGI Friday's; currently only on 200 daily flights to and from Chicago and Denver. Breakfast entrees are $7; lunch and dinner entrees are $10; prices of a la carte items vary. Cash and major credit cards are accepted for meal purchases; however, cash only for alcoholic beverages.

In an economy seat domestic flights for American Airlines, non-alcoholic drinks are free along with a "snack" usually pretzels. On international flights, again non-alcoholic drinks are free and there is a meal free as well if the flight is long enough. From what I hear from my co-workers United is the same.

I've flown 8 flights on AA this past month. In coach, just drinks on flights shorter than 3 hours, a bag of snack mix (think crackers and pretzels -- nuts are no longer included due to allergies) on flights over 3 hours. They will only SELL food on flights over 3 hours --- a chocolate chip cupcake for breakfast at $2.00 or a snack box full of carbs for $4-$6 depending on the time of day. Your best bet is to pick up something at the gate and take in on board if you think you will be hungry. Don't forget, if it isn't "a liquid", you can carry it through security -- I usually take a bag of trail mix and a packaged cookie with me when ever I travel and that clears security easily. They just don't want to see the soda bottles !

Of course, business and first still get their standard meals -- but don't expect full trays except on the longest flights.
