Hi. Just wondering if anyone knows how to become a certified interpreter in American Sign Language? I'm in Reno, NV.

Thanks!

You should be able to take classes at a local metropolitan/community college. I'm not sure what the costs are though. You could also try looking in your local phonebook and see if any such services are provided in your area. If anything, calling one of these places could get you in touch with someone that could guide you in the right direction.

I knew someone that was certified in "sign". I know there are different "levels" or "skill sets"; each with different pay ranges. You can potentially make $25-$50 per hour for signing. You can be hired by schools, businesses, churches (although "voluntary" is preferred), or by an individual.

I personally think that it could be pretty exciting. The friend I mentioned above seemed quite happy. She started her own business - which, you can probably imagine: very little (if any) overhead and tax write-offs - sweet.

He is right. Research nad.org, it has great info and since they are a deaf org they are the best people to research on how they would like their interpreters to be. Besides being fluent in the language, there are etiquette rules that need to be followed and respected.
