The church would have used this as another argument against women's rights.
The church was against african-american's rights, claiming that they are not people
The church was against women's rights, claiming that they are not as importent as men
The church is against gay rights, claiming that homosexuality is a sin
The church is against animal rights, claiming that they don't have souls.
And this is why I hate the church

Then the Christians would use it as a reason to keep their women uneducated and in the kitchen, just like they have used other verses for intolerance and oppression.
