If there is no expiration date on the slip that says "use by such and such date", then you're ok. All that is is letting the DMV know you have completed the course and are now cleared to test for your permit. You have to have the course done to even apply for a permit. If you really are worried, go to www.DMV.CA. GOV, click on permits, FAQ. I am sure their website can provide you with more accurate information. Go to the local DMV and get the booklet on driver education. This has all the information on what you'll need to know on passing the written test. After that you will need to take a driving test. Be aware of the new laws in effect now in CA regarding restrictions on drivers under 18. Good Luck.

I heard you can go in and renew it by just paying a fee. But I'm not completely sure for the state of California. My friend has the same predicament he's permit expires soon but isn't sure he's ready for the drivers test. Can you renew a drivers permit? Or must to take the written test again?

once you complete your drivers ed class you have to enroll in a driving school. the cert is good for 1 year. once enrolled you have to pass a written test at dmv to get your permit and then you start the class you enrolled in. you do a total of 6 hours with the instructor in 1 or 2 hour classes within a 6 month time during which you practice driving with your parent/gaurdian. you have to drive 50 hours including the 6 with instructor. after 6 months and 50 hours you go take your behind the wheel test at dmv. your permit also expires after one year.

Usually what we call the pink slip is the car registration. Are you talking about getting your drivers license? If you are trying to get your drivers license you can just go to the DMV and take the written test and then if you pass, you can take the driving test. You do not need anything else or call the DMV.
