It is considered bad taste to sing along even if you know all of the words. An opera isn't a rock concert. Sit quietly and enjoy the beauty of the singing.

Very, very bad taste! It's an opera, not a church worship... It is out of place to sing along, even if you knew ALL the words.

Yes, I'm afraid it would be seen as impolite to sing along at the opera or at any musical performance unless the singer has invited you/the audience to sing along with them, regardless of whether or not you knew all the words.

It is rude to sing at any performance whether opera or a concert unless you have been invited to sing by the performers.
It irritates me when people sing at concerts. I come to hear the performer, not some loud, usually bad singer in the audience.

No, just fill in with "la la la" and no one would notice.
Although if you're talking about a modern day opera, you'd get kicked out just for making an audible sound during the performance. Taste isn't the issue, it's convention.

VERY bad taste. Unless you are actually in the opera, it is very bad form to make any sort of noise during a performance.

I hope this is a joke. Yes it is in very bad taste to sing- even if you know every word. People paid to hear the professionals, not you.

You can sing along with the CD or MP3/WMA file at home, in the car or wherever, but not at the opera.

Not in bad taste, but awkward for you, the crowd, and the performers because it would sound weird with some "uhhhss", etc. during a great piece of art.
