The other evening, I am driving home from my neighbourhood drug store when who drives up beside me but my ex-girlfriend?! We split up about a year ago after three months of seeing each other and I haven't seen or heard from her since. It wasn't that pretty of a break-up. We parked side-by-side while waiting for a red light ... I'm sure that she also recognized me. Anyway, neither of us made any effort to acknowledge the other (eg: a friendly horn honk or wave ...). I did follow her for a bit (wondering if I should make some kind of effort to contact her but maintaining a safe distance and preferring not to be potentially arrested for harrassment). Eventually, I chose to turn off and return home.

My question is, would you have handled the situation differently? If so, how?

If the break-up was unpleasant then I don't think I'd have done anything differently than you. I don't desire people in my life who have treated me poorly so wouldn't have felt the need to get the attention of an ex, just because they are someone I recognized.

Situations like that can bring up memories though, and sometimes (esp if we were the person who was broken up with) we'll romanticize the situation and wonder what would have happened if we were still together or if we can catch their eye might there be hope to try again...but that's typically fantasy or just not a good idea...

I would have handled it the same way. Even following her for a bit, it's only natural to be curious before coming to your senses and walking (or in your case driving) away.

I think you did the right thing. She probably seen you, just like you seen her and if she wanted to be contacted she probably would have initiated something. The ? is who broke it off and what reason was given?

if i saw one of my ex's i probably would have honked and flipped them off. They are ex's for a reason and I have no desire to go backwards when I can go forward.

I would have just let them go. To be civil to an "ex" is one thing, but I would not take it any further. "Ex"'s are just that for a reason, and like mom_single said, "why go backwards, when you can go forward."

No, it sounds good to me, to be fair if she didn't acknowledge you then you shouldn't have followed her; but I know you just can't help yourself, love will make you do crazy things. I would know.

No, you did just fine. It was a painful time in your life, and there is no need to dredge it up again.
