How will I be able to tell when they are ripe enough to add to home made smoothies? They seem a bit hard and really sour! Thanks!

Ripe ones bounce. Cranberries are naturally tart. thats why they are always sweetened with something. Sugar, splenda, honey, OJ, etc. Cook them in some simple syrup (sugar water) and they will be soft and sweet.

I think they're ripe when they bounce. You should look online to see who they should be prepared. I've never worked with raw berries.

To make them a bit squishier, you could put them in the microwave for up to a minute and add honey to sweeten them a bit.
