Southeastern and Southwestern states are the frienfliest towards gun owners. I live in Ohio, which is more or less a good state to be a gun owner. We don't have state handgun restrictions or state licensingof any kind, no waiting periods, nor ammo laws. The only law is in regards to magazines that hold more than 30(!) rounds. The worst states are Hawaii, Mass., New York, Maryland, Rhode Island, Conn. I think that California laws harrass gun owners, but they are far from draconian compared to the states I have listed.

I've lived in three states...

Illinois is f*cking terrible. They have the Nazi "Firearm Ownership Identification (FOID)" program. The program is pretty useless and does nothing more than run a criminal check once every 5 years. If you are in possesion of a firearm or ammo without a card, it is a felony. If you are from out of state, you can only possesa firearm with a hunting license. An out of stater is also only limited to buying ammo to match the license they have (like gun-deer license means they can only buy shotgun slugs). There is no concaled carry in the state and a firearm in a vehicle must be cased and completely inaccesible (like in the trunk, not in back seat). In the Chicagoland area, gun owners are kind of outcasts. People seem to think gun owners are strange.

Wisconsin is pretty good. No special restrictions. An out of stater can buy firearms or ammo (an out of stater buying guns is subject to the most strict laws, the laws of WI or their home state). There is no concealed carry. Firearms only need to be completely encased in a vehicle. Gun deer hunting is a religion up there. While not everyone owns guns, no one think you're strage if you do.

Alaska is awsome. With the number of guns there, you'd think a gun was mandatory to be a resident. The last I lived there, you could carry guns openly in your vehicle. I hear you need a permit for concealed carry now (I believe that before, no permit was required...never check into it as I carried in plain sight while hiking and such. When I lived in Juneau, there was a very nice, free 400 m rifle and 50 m pistol outdoor shooting ranges (I used to think it was free to shoot in every state...how wrong I was)

I think Oregon would be a solid choice for you, since you wouldn't have to go very far. I am very happy with our gun laws up here, pretty much the only thing that affects us is federal law, and there's no getting around those.

Concealed carry permits are only $100, including your training class, and do not require qualification shooting. Best of all, no pesky assault weapon restrictions. The gun shows up here are awesome, people walking around with AR-15s slung over their shoulders, casually chatting about the latest red-dot sights, etc., etc.

And lots of public forest land available as free target shooting areas.

Well, if you're partial to your climate, you might try Florida. I'm in Oklahoma, and, like Texas, we can conceal-carry with a permit, open carry unloaded, etc. You might also consider Colorado, Missouri, etc. Here's a thought, the next time we elect a president, avoid the states that favor a liberal candidate and you should do alright. Actually, try this link for more concise info.

Go just accross the line to Arizona. They are reasonable. If you want a state with common sence you've gotta be in the South East. My Alabama conceal carry permit is good in seventeen states.

least friendly: california or anything with a huge population
friendly: idaho wyoming, montana states like these are the best. there is no waiting period, no stupid permits, and no magazine capacity limit. all you need do is fill out two pages of paper work.
