Yes, it a small trough for the smaller animals like sheep and goats. When filled with hay, it would have made a perfect cradle for a baby. At the time, laying your baby in a manger was considered a sign of extreme poverty, lack of family of friends, lack of resources. It was shameful.

But today, the manger has become a symbol of hope, of faith, of love and forgiveness, as well as of Jesus the Christ. The story is meant to illustrate how he rose in life as well as in death.
