Whenever I'm on the computer, my kitten jumps up on the desk and starts chasing the mouse and stepping on the keys. Please help! How do I get this kitty to just leave me alone at the computer!

Your kitty sounds affectionate and playful--be happy about that! My cat (5 years old, hardly a kitten) LOVES when I'm on the computer. It's the only time she'll sit in my lap. She "helps" me type and chases the mouse around. Either enjoy your kitten's company and let her lay in your lap while you surf or keep some toys around your desk to tempt her to play with (jingle balls and catnip toys work the best). Good luck. ; )

What you have here is a kitty wanting attention. Find a toy that you and the kitty can play with that will let you spend time with the kitty and do what you need to do on the computer. I have a grown cat that only wants to play when I am on the computer toys and treats work out well. You could fiz it a spot where it knows it can be while you work on the computer.

My kitty used to do the same thing until I bought her some toys that she loves. She only gets them when I am on the computer. Cats can hear the electric sound a computer makes and they like it, a moving mouse looks like prey to them. My kitty also liked to lay on the keys of my laptop when I stopped using it for a minute! Good luck.

You can't stop this behavior. It's deep in kitty's genes. It all goes back to when our beloved domestic kitty, Felis cattus, first began to evolve from its ancestral stock, Felis sylvestris lybicus.

One day about five thousand years ago an Egyptian farmer sat despondently at his breakfast table, perusing his daily newspapyrus. He was reading the help wanted ads, looking for a job as a nomadic hunter gatherer, because his farm was failing due to the destruction of his grain harvest by mice.

As he sat there an enterprising F.s. libycus came slinking out of the desert, hoping to feast on the rodents that infested the farmer's grainery. When she found the grainery locked she jumped up on the farmer's table, sprawled across his newspapyrus and refused to let him read any further. Finally he got up, opened the grainery and went back to work. The cat went into the grainery and wreaked havoc on the mice. The farmer's crop was saved, agriculture became practical and civilization was born.

Ever since, cats have walked, sat and sprawled on papyrus scrolls, newspapers, books and magazines as a way of asserting their domesticity and reminding their humans of the value of cats.

Now, in a striking display of evolution in action, modern cats have expanded this deeply instinctive behavior to include standing, sitting and sprawling in front of computer screens, on keyboards and mousepads, and generally interfering with computer usage.

You'll never stop it. You have five thousand years of feline evolution working against you!

My cat does this too. I think they are jealous and want our attention. So the make us pay attention. My cat Mia loves food so sometimes I just open a small can of fancy feast and get her mind off of the computer, sometimes I just get off of the computer and give her the attention she wants and I feel guilty for having neglecting her.(LOL)It is the same behavior as if you were reading the newspaper and the kitty jumps up and lays across the paper. You are just not paying attention to the cat and the cat is jealous.

I have two kittens and one is a computer nut. If I'm not doing anything serious, I play with her. If it's something that requires focused attention, I pick her up, put her out of the room and close the door. So far, she's shown no signs of trauma. (smile)

My cat does the exact same thing. She loves to watch the cursor move on the screen and paws at it. It is cute but does get annoying. You could get a spray bottle with water in it and squirt her if it bothers you that much. Doing that a few times will stop her. She will get to the point where all you have to do is point the spray bottle at her without squirting and she will run away.

It obviously is a cry (meow) for attention. Take 5 or 10 minutes to play with you kitten. Kittens require more attention than an older cat.

My dog uses my laptop as a pillow when I'm on it. Try putting kitty on your lap and petting it, so she still gets attention, but will quit playing with the keyboard and mouse. Animals seem to like the computer mouse. My dog chewed my desktop one up--do they not know it's not a real mouse! :)
