I like your given name. Before making a decision like that you should wait a while, not just a month or so. And since you mentioned your parents, I have a feeling that you are too young to do this without their consent.

You can only do it when you turn 18. At that point your parents will have no say. But make sure its what you really want to do. As of right now start going by Makelah. Your parents will be pissed but its your life. Next school year when teachers ask your name, tell them you go by Makelah. People who already know you, just say its your middle name and you want to go by that now. That will start getting you used to the name change and everyone else. It might be easier to change your name to Chelsea Makelah because otherwise you will eventually get some odd looks on the random name change.
Eventually your parents will come around even if it takes 5+ years. They won't always call you that but eventually make sure they know that any new people they introduce you to it should be as Makalah. I'm basing this off my experience and this is what I did.
But reconsider the spelling of your name. Makelah doesn't read as Makayla. It reads as Mak - ee -la
Oh and you'll have to go through your counties court house. Go to your counties website and get info there.

I personally like the name Chelsea better than Makelah. You probably can't change your name until you are 18 and an adult and you will have to fill out forms. For now just tell everyone to call you Makelah if you want. Chelsea is a better name though.

How old are you? If you are under 18 you are out of luck. To have a name change you will have to fill out a legal form and pay a fee so if you are still a minor you are out of luck. Just wait until you are older and you might find you like your name again.

As far as I know, you cannot change your legal name until you are 18 years old. Then, you have to fill out a name change form with your local courthouse in order to have a judge legally change your name on your birth certificate. Then, you'd have to take that judgement with you in order to have your name changed on your social security card and driver's license.

I don't really like my name either, but I do like the story about how my parents decided to name me. Perhaps you should find out why your parents named you Chelsea...maybe they've got a nice story about it or you were named after someone.
Besides, you don't want to have to explain how your name is really pronounced to everyone. Makelah looks as if it would be "Maw Kell La La" to me. As a foreigner, I often have to correct people on how to pronounce my name, and most people can't pronounce my Russian surname beyond the first few letters. It does get old quickly.

It is a long legal process to change your name and if you are underage your parents can stop you. Why not just have your friends call you by the name you want? That way if it turns out you don't like that name no problem. If you do like it, when you are older you can change it.

How old are you?
Why do you want your name changed?
What are the possibilities of regretting changing your name, later on? Your name is an identity, it is who you are. Changing a name can majorly effect other areas of your life.
Are you sure this is the best thing to do?
Yes, you would have to fill out legal forms.

When I was a girl I wanted to have the same name as everyone else. I was the only one with my name in my school. I hated it. As I got older I learned the reason behind my name...first name is from my maternal grandmother and my middle name is from my paternal grandmother. I was named for a reason. I loved my name then! You need to keep your name. Your parents gave it to you for a reason. Oh and another thing, a name I really wanted in high school was...Chelsea. It's a beautiful name.

You have to petition the court to change your name. You have to provide a reason why, pay a huge filing fee, wait an extended period of time and often put an ad in the paper in case your debtors have just cause to disagree.
You cannot do this until you are over 18 or your parents have to do it for you.
