No. Use galvanized pipe unless local code allows you to use copper don't use compression fittings. Use flare ftgs. The gas does not eat thru the copper. It's just too flimsy and subject to damage. Usually copper is installed using heat for solder and flux but you wouldn't want to do that on a GAS line. Thats why screw pipe is always better. Good luck.

If my fireplace said dirty words, I wouldn't plumb it at all.
But since you asked so nicely, the answer to your question is--NO, copper will melt or rupture, causing your house to burn down. You REALLY need to call a professional and get a bid on the job, and have him explain exactly what he'd do, and then you can intelligently decide if you want to do it right yourself of let a pro handle the job. Don't mess around with the lives of your family to save a few bucks.

Copper tubing is acceptable for propane. Copper is not suitable for natural gas -- the gas attacks it -- so black iron pipe is used instead. Obviously, copper cannot be exposed directly to the heat of the fireplace, so the final part of the run needs to be iron.

Copper pipe will degrade from the mercaptan used to oderize Nat gas. The copper starts to oxidize and weaken and any small orifice will be clogged with the "fluff" that comes off the pipe interior.

LISTEN TO AVIS - BLACK PIPE FOR GASS SUPPLY - COPPER WILL WORK, BUT IS MORE PLYABLE, WILL LEAK EASIER, & I BELIVE I'VE HEARD THAT THE COPPER REACTS WITH THE MERCONIUM ( STUFF THAT GIVES GAS IT'S SMELL - NAT & L/P ) NOT AN EAT THROUGH PROBLEM, BUT A FLAKE OFF PROBLEM & THE FLAKES MAY CAUSE AUTOMATIC VALVE TO JAM OPEN. YOU KNOW THE REST!
