Sure, use the Remington Slugger slugs. Don't ever shoot a shotgun with screw in chokes without a choke in place-it will mess up the threads.

My 870 Express 12 gauge shoots the Remington Slugger slugs very well with the rifled choke tube, under 2" 5 shot groups at 50 yards. The rifled choke tube is around $25 - $30. It has a constriction of .730 which is the same as the cylinder bore choke tube. The modified choke tube is .710, so you have .020" more constriction with the mod. tube over the rifled choke tube
I also have a Mossberg made barrel for my 870. It is fully rifled, ported and has a cantilever mounted 3x9-32 Bushnell scope. You can usually find them for around $150-$175.
With the rifled barrel and sabot slugs the groups are about 2" at 100 yards.
Like an earlier person said ALWAYS have a choke tube in your barrel while shooting.

Whatever you do do not fire it without the choke in place! My 870 groups rifled slugs best with a modified choke tube in it. Remember, you can only have one "rifled" in the equation at a time. The barrel can be smooth-bore with rifled slugs, or rifled-bore with sabot slugs. Some people can get away with rifled slugs through a rifled bore, but sabots will have no stabilizing spin shot from a smooth-bore. If you expect shots past 75 yards, buy the rifled barrel and shoot Winchester Supreme Partitions, Hornady SST, or Remington Coppersolid sabots. Try all three and find out which is the most accurate.

Yes you can shoot slugs from it, a modified choke does not restrict the barrel at all.
If you plan on shooting slugs for big game hunting, I would suggest getting a slug barrel. They are available in both smooth bore and riffled. I use a smooth bore and it is very accurate to about 75 yards. Both styles have adjustable sights like a riffle, and a scope can also be mounted.

The 870 Express comes with both barrels or atleast mine did.
It does shoot slugs though. as previously stated I would use the Slug barrell for that.

Slugs don't know about choke. Fire at will.
