Most people think that January 1st is a holiday because, well, it is a holiday according to the federal government. Most state and local governments consider it a holiday also.

Most major malls in the area will be open for the holidays as this can be quite a busy time for shoppers which retailers love to see the more the merrier. By the way I have to work most holidays so the least the malls can do is be open for business.

I'm at work right now. I think most of the malls in my area ( I live in VA ) are open special hours for New Years.
