I have a old flash of my Yaschica Electra 35. Is there a way i can use that as a slave flash with my 400 D. Is there a mechanism to fire this external flash alongwith the camera?

You can get a "PEANUT". It's a light sensor that you simply attach to the flash units shoe. When you use the cameras flash, it will trigger the other flash at the same time. You can buy one for around 10-15 bucks at a camera store. They are only good for a short distance though.

Most probably no. The only flash that will work with Canon 400D is the Canon Speedlite EX series or the Sigma Flash.

You can purchase a Slave Unit for your old flash, like this one
for under $30

Using the built in flash on your 400D, when it fires, it will cause your old flash to fire simultaniously and wirelessly!
