Only if you have realistic expectations. In your question you called him a child and a man. He is only a man now. The relationship will never be one of father and child, but it can become a strong friendship.

it can be done is you put a lot of time and effort into it and if he is willing. It will never be like a parent child relationship but, you can become very good friends and maybe one day be like a second parent....Just give it time and it will work out just dont be too pushy and dont think it will happen overnight

start with being his friend. and maybe knowing and befriending his set of friend would help.
