The Muslims religion split shortly after the death of Muhammad on the issue of who his successor(s) would be. Much as it has to do with the important of the teachings of Ali, a nephew of Muhammad. Similar to the Christian debate over whether the Pope is the head of the church, or the Bible. Each group follows a different set of teachers (imans) and different interpretations of the Quran. (Again not much different then Protestants and Catholics)
