I'd like to know a variety of reasons a soldier can earn a promotion.
Can being in the military for a long period of time be a reason?
Saving 10 soldiers lives?
Well planned strategies?
I'd especially love to hear from real soldiers tell me their reasons for being promoted.

Promotions are based on Time in grade/education. Once you have the time in grade enlistd soldiers also accumulate promotion points for education, awards, etc. that help thm compete with othr soldiers who are up for promotion. Soldiers are chosen from top down and put in available slots for that rank. Most promotions also require completion of a particiular military school.

For officers -- your promotion is based on time in grade as well as education and before you can submit a packt for promotion you have to be in a position for the desired rank, have your required education (bachelors, military schools)

pv1 (E-1) to Spc. (E-4) are all effected by time. However, you can speed these up by recruiting, J ROTC, and skills for rank. The rest have nothing to do with time, but here is a list of things that could help including but not limited to;
-performing above and beyond the call of duty
-showing selfless service in everyday life
-always placing your mission first and following all orders given to you
(in active duty this list as well as more will earn
promotion points and that helps with ranking
up.)

Some come with certain achievements like;
-obtaining a set amount of college credits
-joining the ROTC program in college
-having been J ROTC in high school

I hope that helped a little bit. Support your troops and God Bless the USA

E-1 through E-4 are automatic in most MOS/Rates, meaning that you have to be in in the service for so long (TIS) but there are ways you can get promoted faster. You can go into Basic Training as E-2 if you get 2 people to enlist under you, go in as E-2 if you complete the DEP book and get it signed off, go in as E-3 if you get 4 people to sign under you are have college credits, and I think you can even go in as E-4 if you have a bachalers degree in anything.

As for E-5 and higher, it depends on how many people are fighting for the promotion. If there are 100 people in MOS/Rate #1 and there 500 in #2, you'll probably get promoted in #1 faster than #2. It also depends on good you are at what you do, if you suck at what your doing youll be in E-4 for a long time. But it usually takes awhile get E-5 and above.

E1-E4 promotions are for time in service and grade. Some E5 promotions have become like that depending on the MOS. But typically, at E5 and then E6 one appears before a decentralized board to be assessed on potential for promotion. If recommended, when that soldiers meets the monthly promotion point cutoff score, he/she is promoted.

That's just for the Army, though. And it gets different for E7's, E8's, and E9's. If you want to know more check out your local recruiter. He/She would love to answer any and all of your questions.

Just as in civiliam life, soldiers are promoted according to the efficiency and diligence to their assigned duties.Your superiors are watching you, not all the time, but they are eyeballing your performance when you least suspect it. This is why goof offs don't get promoted.

I was serving in the military in Germany some years ago, and my friend got arrested by the German police for being drunk and disorderly. He would only give his name, rank and serial number, and we weren't even at war with the Germans at the time.

Just follow the paperwork. It's spelled out exactly, and if you play the game, you'll get the promotion. In the early ranks it's time and attitude, but as you get higher, you do have to achieve certain milestones.

Doing your job, passing the advancement exam, for those under E7. For E7 - E9 and above you have to take a test and be selected by a selection board for advancement. For officers O1 - O4, you have to be breathing. After that you have to be selected by boards and congress.

It all depends on who you know and who likes you, but more important then that hard work that stands out. Like any other job you must find a way to stand out from everyone else and work hard.
