It could be anything from a line cook to a sous chef, a head cook, chef, executive chef, Master Chef. There are a whole lot of divisions within professional cooking.

Hate to spoil the 'chef' party, but I question if there is such a thing as a professional cook. Professional means someone who has specialist academic and practical training, and who belongs to a body that governs their activities. Think lawyer or doctor.
I'd say that 'chef' would apply to the head of kitchen, but not that he is a professional.

Chef - Chef is a term commonly used to refer to an individual who cooks professionally. Within a restaurant however, chef (French for chief or head) is often only used to refer to one person: the one in charge of everyone else in the kitchen. This is usually the executive chef.

Depends on their postion and education. Cook, Line Cook, Sous Chef, Executive Chef. etc. " Chefs" usually have education (degree) and some years of experience and frequesntly are supervisors/managers.
