No, they may change for awhile, but eventually they go back to doing the same things. I think the only way they might change is through counselling or some major life-changing event.

Bob T,
I do think people can change...maybe not all at once but they can change. I have lost alot of weight in the last year...that is change...
I am getting off of prescription drugs that is a change. I don't drink as much as I did that is a change. Lying and cheating...we all lie and cheat to a certain extent...being lazy...I don't sleep at night so I sleep during the day alot. So I am trying to change that also. So for you and all the naysayers that have answered I would say yes, people can change in a positive way.

lying, cheating, being lazy
This usually happens because they are unhappy about themselves or their lives. If they can find something that makes them happy, then they will become passionate about it and work towards making something of it.
spending money they don't have
This will need help. This is a something which may require help from a financial counsellor or something depending on the size of the problem. But it will need a specialist because the person won't be able to do it them self.
So people can change, but it sometimes requires a lifestyle change and/or help from a specialist.

People can always change their ways. I have changed the way I live over the past 2 years. I use to hang out with people who loved drama in their lives, always something going on with my group of friends. It got to be too much for me to handle so I decided, even though these people were very good friends of mine to stop hanging out with them. Since I decided to stay away from all this crap, my life and the way I view it has changed. I am less cynical about things, I enjoy being around people who don't thrive on the drama. My life is less complicated and I also feel better about myself. People can change at any time, they just have to make up their minds to do what is right by others and themselves. Most people say they are going to change, and they might for a while, but most I know go back to the same old person they were. I try to be around people now with positive attitudes and not dwell in all that stupid drama crap, life is to short to deal with friends that have so many issues and don't do anything about them but whine, instead of having the strengh to deal problems and fix them instead of complaining all the time. It just takes some inter strengh to change and be sincere, you don't do it for other people, you do it to better yourself.

No not if they have their minds made up.Set in their ways and keep on doing what they want to do. If it is going OK for them why should they change. They love the high . The feeling of control over someone else. They think if i can this time it just makes it easier and easier the next time and the next.

it all depends on whether or not the person wants to change for himself or being forced to change for someone else.. because if he wants to change for himself then i think , yes people can change .. but if someone trys to force someone to change then no because the change may last for a while but more than likely the person will go back to there old ways in no time .. . for example my parents when i was younger always got on to me for being lazy not helping out and well when they threated me to take stuff away i would change but then i would revert back to my old habits but after i got out of hs i realized that i had to change to be succesful in life .. so i made the change and i have never wanted to go back to my old ways

if they work really hard yes
for example smoking i mean everyone says its real hard to quit and you hear about people quitting so why cant people stop cheating? it seems to me that you can change, but not you're whole personality, there will always be a bit of the old you left inside, but not be displayed. if that makes sense ?

No in most cases.
There are some people with the willpower to change but the majority of the unwashed masses don't (in my opinion).

If someone wants i think that s/he can change. Otherwise we would be like robots doing the same thing or behaving the same way all thru our lives.

I believe they can change for a short while but sooner or later they will fall back into their old habits.
