Hotel rooms the age is usually 18, but some hotels say 21. Airline tickets, well if purchased online there is no real way to verify age. You can fly alone I think after the age of 6, but again that is dependant on the airline. Go to their individual sites.

As long as you have a credit card, you should be fine for an airline ticket. You can always purchase with cash, it just sets up flags. Some airlines will, in fact, sell a airline ticket to a 16 or 17 year old with no question -- kids travel to/fr school all the time. You do need a photo ID. Call the airline's 1-800 number ahead of time if you want.
As for a hotel room, it really is up to the individual chain. Most say an adult (18 yr old) must occupy the room. And most also require an ID at check in. Of course, the cheaper (and less safe) hotels, may flex that rule for a 17 year old who might be caught in a city during a layover, etc. Again, the best bet is to book on line and call the 1-800 number ahead of time.
