We have to hold our son lot's when he's teething... that and tylenol. Going for walks outside or baths or even reading/singing to him helps some. But the only thing that really takes his pain away is the Tylenol- he hates cold things in his mouth, and the Baby Orajel didn't do anything at all for him. So just try different things and see what you can get to work.

You may not be able to get him to stop crying completly but there are some things that you can do. If holding him seems to sooth him you won't spoil him, so by all means hold him. The best teething toys are the gel filled ones that you put in the freezer but any toy that he can bite down on is helpful. If none of that helps they do sell teething tablets and a gel that you can rub on thier gums. I lived thriugh it twice and it is rough but you'll make it and it will get easier. Good luck.

Something safe to chew on will help. Here are some ideas:
1. cold, wet cloth
2. rubber pacifier
3. nylon web belt
4. your clean finger
You can also get some topical ointments meant for teething babies. They numb the gums but some babies do not like the taste.

Clove essential oil diluted in olive oil (This is the active ingredient in temporary fillings and will not numb the throat the same way anbesol and the like will. Not to mention it is safter)
Freeze washclothes or small stuffed toys. Wet with water or breastmilk/formula
And when it is really bad tylenol. Thout it only helps a little.

Hyland's Teething tablets. You can find them at a health food store. They also make a colic tablet, they worked wonders for my son. They are a small tablet that instantly disolves. Good luck.

Orajel for babies. It's the only thing that worked for my kid.
Also, try letting him chew on frozen waffles, or other chunkier frozen items. There are these small net bags you can get at Target/Walmart in the baby eating section that you can put frozen fruit in and they can suck on those without a choking issue for a long time.

metal spoon kept in freezer to chew on
ice cube tied up in a baby sock
ice cube or "boob cube" in a Baby Safe Feeder
stalk of cold, hard celery to chew on
massage baby's gums with your finger or with one of those "finger condom" looking baby toothbrushes
