Stand over the cat and look down. Can you see a "waist"? If not you have a fat cat. I have a fat cat too. My cat is now on the Half Hour cat diet. What you do is put down cat food for a half hour two times a day. This is to discourage snacking from boredom.
I don't know if you can put kittens on a diet. My cat is 6 years old. Ask a vet.

8 pounds sound sort of big for a kitten, my almost 3 year old cat weighs 8-9pounds.
But I guess it depends on build and breed and all that. If unsure, I'd check with a vet.

if your kitten has any maine coon or norwegian forest genes--kitty will be huge. "normal" kitties are small animals--when you mix in the maine coon gene, then you get a giant. feed him all he wants to eat until he in at least 1 year old--maine coon kitens do not mature until they are 4 years old. normal kitties are about 3 years of age when mature.
my maine coon mix kitten is 6 months and 10 pounds.and not 1 ounce of fat on his active body.
enjoy kitty--he will love playing with myou--teach him fetch and catch and have teaser toys with bells for him to attack--play with him--you will ave the most loyal friend anyone has ever known.
until he is 1 year old, i feed my baby 3 cans of 3 ounce food every day and leave out dry food in an auto feeder--he will not eat more than he needs --he will not get fat unless h is inactive.
my kitty lives on a boat, so his running spac is somewhat limited--but he finds a way to play and expend his energy--no fat.

He could be slightly overweight, however male cats do usually get larger than females. I have 3 babies from the same litter and my boy is bigger than the girls. Keep them active and feed them on a schedule.

Yes, your cat is over weight. You should get some diet cat food, this will help your diet lose enough wight to be normal weight size. If this doesn't work go to a veterinarian for more help. Hope this helps, and best of luck.

It depends on the size of the cat, is it a small cat? My maine coon is 16 lbs, but he is a big cat. 8 lbs sounds fine.

it depends in how big he is, at my vet they have a sign telling if your cat is overweight and some of the overweight signs are if it has a sagging belly, you cant feel the ribs at all and from above it doesnt look slim and slender, it looks a little rounder.
