We're pleased with our Torrent (the Pontiac version of the Equinox). The engine is low-tech and little raspy; but this car is priced much less than a comparable Rav-4 or CRV. I'm a GM buyer. Even though I believe the Japanese have better quality control; their cars are not invincible as some would have you believe.
If small is okay, go look at the Pontiac Vibe. It's a nice joint GM-Toyota design.

I'm not sure where you live, but the cobalt/G5 definetly comes in an automatic transmission. If not then the Impala is a very solid car, although on the large side. I would recommend the Pontiac G6. It comes in sedan or coupe, has good looks, and i've heard it is a reliable car.

Check out dodge... they have a great small suv called the nitro, and an even smaller utilitarian vehicle called the caliber. Nice small trucks.

GM is in a little trouble right now. There new trucks look great, but everything else they have isn't really that great.

G.M. forced me into bankruptcy. Could not make car payment and shell out $3000 for transmission. I'll never buy Ford,Dodge,or G.M. They are made in Mexico with Chinese parts.
