I was in my first car accident on Saturday. The other driver was at fault, was I supposed to get his insurance information? When I call my company what exactly are their responsibilities? Keep in mind I've been driving for 10 years and never had an accident I just paid the insurance and kept it moving. All the offices are closed until Tuesday, do I need to get a copy of an accident report? I was also out of town when the accident occured like 600 miles from where I live can they fax it to me? Help!

Oh I forgot, I did call the police, my car is completely smashed! The other driver wanted to just exchange information and leave the scene, but I knew enough to tell him no and wait until the police got there. I do have a case number to give to my insurance.

You should get the police to do an accident report. Once the accident report is complete, your insurance company will obtain a copy of it and proceed from there. I'm assuming you and the other driver provided insurance cards and drivers licenses to the police? The insurance company takes that information from the accident report. All the insurance company needs is the police case number.
P.S. It's good that you waited for the police to arrive. You did the right thing! d:)
If the police ever tell you to just, "exchange information" with the other driver and submit a "short form", then you should get the drivers license, car license and insurance information from the other driver, then go to your nearest police station to fill out their "short form". You then take all of that info to your insurance company.

After Accident unfortunately happens, call cops, they investigate and blame someone for turning wrongly or whatever. Then they write a report, go there way. The tow company comes to the accident spot to tow the cars, thats how they f'ing make their own money.
You will call the police station closest to the accident the next day and get the accident number. Contact you insurance to report the accident info with 24 hrs.
Contact a lawyer to explain and get thier oppinion. If you likely not to get any money, don't bother to hire one, 'cause its going to cost you.
File a claim with insurance company to replace your car if you had full coverage or to give you some money if you only had a liability insurance.
If the ambulance came to rescue either of you, then all these can be done way later after you're well and better.

First thing Tuesday morning call your insurance agent and report the accident to them and get their advice on what to do next. That's what you pay them for. You should get from the other driver (his complete name, address, phone numbers, insurance company name and policy number) And if there were any witnesses get statements from them.As for the police report contact the police department in the city/town that the accident happened in about how to get a copy of the report being that you live somewhere else. You may have to go to the police department there or they may send/fax it to you for a small fee. Then take your vehicle to a body shop and have them arrange for a rental car for you while your is being repaired.(If the other person is at fault their insurance company has to pay for the rental) along with any expenses you occur like losing time out of work to pickup the accident report and if there are any medical bills or towing and storage charges.IF YOU WERE INJURED IN THE ACCIDENT AND REQUIRED A AMBULANCE RIDE TO A EMERGENCY ROOM YOU MIGHT WANT TO CONSIDER CONTACTING A PERSONAL INJURY LAWYER AS YOU MIGHT HAVE A POSSIBLE LAWSUIT AND IF YOU DON'T AT THE VERY LEAST TALK TO A LAWYER THE FIRST TALK IS ALWAYS FREE YOU MIGHT BE DENYING YOURSELF POSSIBLE COMPENSATION FOR YOUR INJURIES AND LOSSES.

Where I live, it depends on the severity. For a small accident (less than 500 damage), we just need to swap insurance info, and drivers license info. Keep in mind, 500 is not much when it comes to auto repairs.
If the accident is more serious (more than 500 damage), we're supposed to call the police, who will do a accident report (you still need to swap insurance info, and licence info). If you then deal with your insurance co., you need the accident report ref. # (I'm sure they can contact the police to get a copy of the report, as long as they have the #)

You should have called police, got ALL information you could get
ask to see insurance card, drivers licence, the more information you can get the better off you are, once you have called your insurance company, don't let the other parties insurance company call you and answer their questions---This is the job of your insurance company, I had this pulled on me when I had a wreck after 20 years which wasn"t my fault.

You probly don't have to get the police report. The insurance company will do that. What state are you in? Rules are different in different states. In California, police will not even come out unless someone is hurt. They will just tell you to exchange insurance info and name, address, phone number and license plate info are helpful too. Especially get the LICENSE PLATE!! In case the other party has no insurance or lies about the other info.

the police were suppose to make a report
you and the other driver were suppose to exchange insurance/contact info
you were suppose to contact your insurance company as soon as you got home/near a phone
yes you need to get a copy of the accident report- takes usually 4-5 days to have printed
can they fax it to you?
No idea since it contains personal info- they might want some type of identification to release ( I picked mine up in person)

I'm glad you notified the police. Report everything to your insurance company on Tuesday. Do you have the other drivers license and ins co info? I hope so. Your ins co will handle contacting the other driver. Take a deep breath.
