I have some lobster claws left over from last night. They're pretty big, and the lobster crackers I bought don't really fit around them. I'm having a hard time getting into them. Any suggestions on opening these?

I would smash them with something. A lot of lobster places offer hammers with the meals. I would put them in a plastic bag and hit them with a meat tenderizer hammer or something else heavy.

Lobster Claw Cracker

If the lobster crackers won't work for you, (and a hammer will smash the meat), try this. This is what chef's do to open claws and keep the claw meat whole...

Hold the claw by the tip and with the BACK of a large knife, whack across the middle of the claw with the back of the knife (NOT the side of the knife, the back). This will place a thin cut across the claw. Flip the claw over and make a matching cut on the opposite side. Now bend the claw back & forth until it breaks open. You now have opened the claw and the claw meat is whole.

If the crackers don't fit, try nutcrackers if you have them (and if they are larger than what you've already tried, of course). Otherwise, I'd go straight for the hammer approach -- just wash the hammer first, and you can use it to crack open the flat part of the claw pretty easily. At that point, the lobster crackers you have will probably do the trick for the resulting "pieces," too.

Try a large pair of mechanics Vise Grips.

Personally, I just bite them open. But, if your teeth aren't as strong, follow the other people's suggestions.

wrap them in a dish towel and give them a gentle whack with a hammer or mallet.
