Could be an answer to the ASBO situation

Perhaps persistant offenders could be given this option

Then again giving a gun to someone with and ASBO doesn't seem such a good idea

But yes I think it would go some way to instilling some discipline and moral values in some of the young

You notice that I say "some" as I think that it is only some that need some outside intervention in getting their lives back on to the same track as the majority.

No. First of all, there is no evidence that mandated military service will instill discipline or cut down on crime. I am more than positive that crime still existed in America when military service was mandated and I am also sure that there were some non-disciplined individuals forced into service by the draft. This latter point is perhaps the biggest criticism of a mandated draft. The all volunteer military produces individuals that WANT to be in the military. A mandated draft will necessarily bring in individuals that may have a philosophical opposition to military service and thus do NOT want to be there. Personally, if I were involved in a war I would want someone who wanted to be in the military protecting my back instead of someone more concerned with their own well-being due to a lack of self-discipline, honor, and courage, all of which is arguably innate in those who choose military service.

Certainly yes:
Having watched bad lads army over the last few series I see young kids without a future, but jail, become respectable adults after only 6 weeks. It is hard hitting for these lads to bow down to discipline but after a while they fall into line and become responsible people with an aim in life. It is all about teamwork and self belief, it's about time these ASBO crap deterents are scrapped and a short sharp shock will do the trick.

No doubt some of the grotbags roaming the streets could do with some discipline in them, but it'll never happen, unless WWIII breaks out.
If national service was compulsory and a recruit didn't want to do something, he/she would just point blank refuse, and what could the instructor do? You can't physically force someone to do something. Whereas at the moment you get kicked out of training.
It's one of the things that makes our army great - all servicemen/women have worked hard to get through basic training because they want to be a soldier. Think what a nightmare it would be if you had a load of people who didn't want to be there.
"If you don't like it - leave!"

Like my other question I would love to see "Staff Sergeant Eddie Stone" take a bunch of little ASBO scumbags through the SAS selection course on "Hard tac" like that TV series a few years ago.

Seriously they would last five minutes before they were crying for their mummies.

Might make them into men rather than little shits though.

Handing out ASBOS doesn't work, but an American style bootcamp with scary drill instructors might.

LOL that is annoying to have faith I survived intense college and that i replaced into an "A" pupil. college is have been ladies have been and have been I performed soccer so I had a blast. It did not harm that by the time i began out intense college my Dad had stop eating (He replaced into between the worst alcoholics I even have ever seen) . mom replaced into nevertheless a discomfort yet Dad and that i grew to grow to be ultimate friends, So i assume my view of my intense college years is slightly biased. the college Dances have been vast activities in a small city that had one action picture tutor with only one show screen, no speedy nutrients eating places and no shops. We did not get Rock concert activities coming interior a hundred and fifty miles so i did not see my first stay stay overall performance till I went away to college till you count huge form close by bands enjoying on the Dances.

never! national service was created to re-enforce our troops during the two great wars. national sevice would create an army of troops that dont want to be there. our armed forces are the best in the world because the troops enjoy what they do, and if you enjoy something then you do better. although, if the youths of today were sent to a military type academy for their crimes, then they would surley benifit from that more, rather than ruin the reputation of our already great service men and women.

being in the navy we have this conversation alot and the general feeling is it should be brought in if you are not staying in education or joining a public service .also it should not just be the forces it should include the fire service police and NHS for example which would give more skills to these kids and in turn lower crime and unemployment

I don't like this but now yes.
If we cannot be bothered to address the issues that confront inner city youth today which in my opinion are legion and much more complex than they were in my day.
Then the really violent ones should not only do National service but potentially be made into the backbone of the army it's what they do, fight.

Yes. It would instill some discipline into CHAVS and hoodies. Wonder if the British Muslims would have to do it or would they be exempt?
