Get Airplanes from Boots the chemist or similar, they work very well. OR before you fly try a Hopi Candle treatment, sucks all the blockage out like magic!!

If your problem is as bad as mine--it sounds like it--nothing will eliminate it completely.
The chewing gum, swallowing, hard candy, coughing, etc., etc. help very little.
There are special ear pressure plugs that help a little. Plus taking a decongestant about an hour before descent helps a bit.
I've been to a ears and nose specialist because of the severe pain and that's the best advice he could offer.
Looking forward to the day when something to prevent our problem is invented.

you have to find a way to open up your ears. When the plane decends there is a slower change in pressure than for take off..so sometimes you need to assist your ears in equalizing. If you can simulate yawning, there will be a little noise in your ears, this is letting this pressure out bit by bit...if you let it build up it can be really dangerous. Chewing gum can help but it doesn't work for me. I have to open my mouth like I am yawning and then sort of flex my jaw...sounds rediculous, but works. Plus, I'd rather look stupid than feel like someone is shoving a sharp knife in my eardrum. Also, never sleep near the end of the trip. You could ask the flight attendant to wake you up if you fall asleep as you decend because if you are already sleeping you're screwed! GOOD LUCK and happy flying!

We deal with this daily on military flights with less pressurization than commercial flights. The maneuver to stay ahead of releasing the expanded air in the ear is to Valsalva frequently upon decent to force air into the Eustachian tubes and clear the ear pressure. Valsalva = expiratory effort (gently) with the mouth closed and the nostrils pinched shut. This should prevent your problem.

The best thing is to use a chewing gum or you could also talk with someone, it could help you to forget of having ear ache when decending. When talking with that person you may also tell him/her about your problem of ear ache, then the person will probably understand you and help you!! Good luck!!!!

Because your ears and nose are connected, about 10mins before you descend, use a nasal spray to help keep your airways clear. Then keep chewing some gum (preferably mint), even after you land. I also sprinkle a few drops of peppermint oil onto a tissue to sniff, it also helps to keep you unblocked and prevents motion sickness.

chewing gum is the obvious choice because you dont have to think about what you are doing.

what you really need to do is drop your jaws as if to take a big yawn. that movement will cause your ears to pop to release the pressure. chewing gum achives this but not to full extenet unless you will chew like a cow which is really the action you want to be doing. Drop your jaws a couple of times and you'd be set.

Go to boots they do a great ear plug my wife and daughter used to be in tears with the same problem but these plugs are almost 100% successful.

I have this problem too. Some times it hurts so bad I almost go deaf. I found pinching my nose, closing my mouth and exhale until your ears pop really helps. You may have to do it a few times on descending.

Suck on a nice hard...... boiled sweet. Sherbert Lemons are me fav..

It's the change in pressure. "Pop" your ears to release the pressure build up also.

Pinch your nose and close your mouth. Then try and blow out of your nose hard repeat this a few times and the trapped gases in your ears should release with a popping sensation.
