Obviously, many ways involving deep bodies of water etc exist, but one assumes you mean "dispose of legally, for value", i.e. "sell".
In the United States, variants with certain features such as collapsible stocks, flash suppressors, and bayonet lugs were prohibited for sales to civilians during the period 1994-2004 by the Violent Crime Control and Law Enforcement Act of 1994, under the provision known as the Assault Weapons Ban. Since the expiration of the Federal AWB in September of 2004, these features are now only illegal in certain states.
You need to identify the jurisdiction in which you wish to dispose of the weapon if you want a more specific answer.

You mean an AR-15/M-16-A1? Or do you mean a commercial sporter rifle based in the AR-15? If it's the latter, you will get good money even from a gunshop.

Why did you post this in "hunting"? Damn, what are you hunting?
If all else fails, call up your buddy at the cop shop, and suggest to them that there is an AR15 that needs to find a new home. I'm sure they'll figure it out.

good day scott
where do you live in a free state or a gun controlling state? you can list it in your local want ads or as others have said on here bring it to a local gunshop. depending on the make/model and year produced they range realisticly between the 650.00-3500.00 range. ar15.com is a great sight to check the year manufactered to determine in fact if it is a highly valuable pre-ban or a average post ban weapon. feel free to e-mail me and we can talk more about it if you wish my name @yahoo.com

There are a number of ways to get rid of an AR-15, but the best method by far is to send it to me for "disposal". I will ensure that your de-AR-15-ization is quick, painless and trouble-free.

Sell that weapon to some one who knows what its for. Do not however- take it to a dealer or Law Enforcment. They like to dispose of them and a few of us still live out in the sticks and love to fire them at will.

You can sell it (Depending on local laws), trade it etc..... You can also surrender it to your local law enforcement officials if you so choose.

You can ask a gun dealer if they want to buy it. They have to have the license to buy and sell automatic weapons that is if it is fully automatic.
