The charge: being Christian, which was illegal enough in the Roman Empire.

The fact that he was spreading the faith, and was the earthly head of the early Church, made it even harder on him from a persecution standpoint.

Saint Peter, also known as Simon ben Jonah/BarJonah, Simon Peter, Cephas and Kepha — original name Simon or Simeon (Acts 15:14) — was one of the Twelve Apostles whom Jesus chose from among his original disciples.

The early writings indicated in the following paragraphs witness to the tradition that Peter, probably at the time of the Great Fire of Rome of the year 64, for which the Emperor Nero blamed the Christians, met martyrdom in Rome.

A phrase in the last chapter of the Gospel of John refers to Peter’s martyrdom by crucifixion, though without reference to its location: "'…when you are old you will stretch out your hands, and another will gird you and take you where you do not want to go.' Jesus said this to indicate the kind of death by which Peter would glorify God" (John 21:18-19).

When, in the early fourth century, the Emperor Constantine I decided to honour Peter with a large basilica, the precise location of Peter's burial was so firmly fixed in the belief of the Christians of Rome that the building had to be erected on a site that involved considerable difficulties, both physical (excavating the slope of the Vatican Hill, while the great church could much more easily have been built on level ground only slightly to the south) and moral and legal (demolishing a cemetery). The focal point of St. Peter's Basilica, both in its original form and in its later complete reconstruction, is the altar placed over what is held to be the exact place where Peter was buried.

Cheers!!!!

scholars say that Peter was martyred in Rome at the time of Nero's persecution of Christians. You may recall that in AD 64, a great fire burnt an enormous portion of the city of Rome. There were rumors that Nero himself ordered that fire. To silence the talk, Nero seized upon the Christians in Rome as the “scapegoat,” accusing them of starting the fire. He rounded up a great number of Roman Christians and torched their bodies in the arena to placate the angry Roman public. Peter was crucified upside down, and Paul was beheaded. Christians elsewhere in the empire were left alone.

Jesus told him to follow him. We may be uncertain and fearful about our future. But if we know God is in control, we can confidently follow Christ. Peter was Crucified for his Faith in Christ- upside down because he did not feel worthy of dying as his Lord did. In the JVK Bible.LDP

Simon Peter was not a pope, that is a myth by the non-Christian Catholic church.

uh....peter was not the first pope...He was the first of the 12 to see Jesus as the Messiah...His death was by the same hands as the ones who killed Christ....because the truth He spoke challenged their religious mindset and controlling attitude...their lack of sight to see God caused them to accuse peter, like Christ of blasphemy.....indeed the truth is abundant.. pharisees dont like to be told they are wrong....praise God for freedom in Christ..†
