English is an official language in the UK and Eire.
It is also widely spoken in most tourist areas across Europe, and particularly well in Germany, Netherlands, Spain, Portugal, Greece, etc. You may have more trouble finding people who speak English away from cities and tourist regions though.

It would be an idea to learn at least few phrases in the language of the country you plan to visit though - you can't assume that everyone you meet wil speak English, and even if they do, people tend to appreciate it if you make a bit of an effort, too. Hello, goodbye, please, and thank you are good words to start with!

UK, Ireland and Malta have English as their main language.

Norway have mandatory English starting in elementary school, so shouldn't be any problems there.
Never had any problems with getting understood in Sweden, Denmark and Netherlands.

I don't remember when it comes to the rest.
I think most places are okay, but that maybe people from older generations have more problems with English than the younger generation.
