Rehydrate. Drink plenty of water before, during, and after consuming alcohol.
Eat. Eating helps decrease the absorption of alcohol systemically. Eating salty foods will also help the body retain fluids. (I once knew a guy from Denmark who swore that he never had a hangover because he took a teaspoon of table salt after a long night of drinking. Be warned - this remedy is not verified!)
Replace Vitamin B. Brits and anglophiles swear by a product called Berocca which is a fizzy tablet like Alka-Seltzer that contains high amounts of Vitamin B6 and Vitamin C. Berocca is not available in the U.S. currently, but a similar product, called Emergen-C is available.
Choose your poison. Some drinks give you worse hangovers than others. Clear liquor like vodka and gin are lower in congeners (alcohol impurities) because of the filtering process involved. Fewer congeners mean a lower risk of hangover.
I know many of you will not want to hear this, but, of course, the best thing to do is avoid a hangover all together. Some good behavioral tips to limiting your consumption but still participating in the festivities:
Try alternating beverages. Drink an alcoholic beverage, then drink water or club soda. You'll likely cut your alcohol consumption in half.
Choose something you don't really like. Many of us like to have a drink in our hand as a crutch at a party. We can always take a sip when there's a lull in the conversation. Choose a drink that is not to your liking. You'll be reminded of the fact every time you take a sip, and you'll be unlikely to finish the whole thing.

Go for a run - you will sweat out some of the alcohol literally. Then eat some toast or something bready - bagel perhaps - then just drink water all day. Alcohol causes dehydration that is one of the reasons for the hangover.
When you start to run you will feel sick but just keep on and you will feel better.
Next time when you come home from drinking - eat a sandwich or a least 2-3 slices of bread and drink as much water as you can. 9 times out of 10 this will prevent a hangover.

Here is some advice from a newsletter I read:
______________________________________________
You've just opened your eyes to find yourself crumbled into
a collapsed mess, hopefully in a bed, hopefully in somewhat
familiar surroundings, but, worst of all, awake. Your mind
gradually manages to reconstruct some sort of memory of some
portion of the previous night's activities. You feel like
the worst part of hell ...this is the cue for the proverbial
"I'll-never-drink-again" declaration. You need help. Quick.
You are suffering from the Big Three:
1. Dehydration - the alcohol has forced evaporation of a
certain vital portion of the body's water.
2. Nervous shock - with alcohol you're coming off the effects
of a mild overdose of a depressant drug, so your nerves are
displaying the great Newtonian natural law of action/reaction
by going into a relatively hypersensitive state.
3. Malnutrition - pumping all that alcohol and liquid through
your body has effectively flushed away a significant supply
of your storage of vitamins and nutrients, chemicals which
would stimulate natural defense systems, but you're running
seriously low on them now.
What you need to do is take some restorative steps to begin
a recovery process.
Hydrate...water, water, water. Gatorade, Diet Coke, juice.
Tea sweetened with honey.
It also means trying to eat something that will help to re-
place the nutrients you've lost. That really should be in
the forms of fruits/vegetables, NOT fatty, greasy junk, not
dairy foods, something that isn't too tough on the already
beat-up digestive system.
Bananas are great for key vitamins....tomatoes! Strange but
true. This sort of explains half of the reason that a Bloody
Mary is the standard morning-after drink.
So, next time, try it. Maybe a little light pasta with a
meatless, greaseless, tomato sauce. Cold gazpacho or a mild
salsa may work too, but your stomach will be in no mood for
onions and peppers.
A glass of V8 may be just the thing. Citrus juices tend to
bother the stomach too; but tomatoes are highly acidic, so
I can't explain that part.
_____________________________________________
However, I personally am hung over right now and think if I tried to drink V8 or eat a bannana I would barf....

4 words: Hair of the Dog! The last thing you want to do is drink more. In fact, it makes you sick to your stomach to think about it! But after you have just a little drink you'll notice you feel WAY better. Just use " hair of the dog" to get you through the day until you can get a good, full nights sleep in. Then you should be totally recovered.
