Because you usually end up in bed after a few of them, so you have plenty of tales to tell. The term was originally spelled "cocktale", and the female bartenders told the best ones back in the day.

The earliest known printed use of the word "cocktail," as originally determined by Dr. David Wondrich in October 2005, was from "The Farmer's Cabinet", April 28, 1803, p [2]: "11. Drank a glass of cocktail--excellent for the head ... Call'd at the Doct's. found Burnham--he looked very wise--drank another glass of cocktail."

cocatele' was a indo-french term that meant drink (coca) for socializing, or talking (tele). As the brits picked up this term from the ship traders, they applied it to thier gin-mixes, and newly found rum-mixes from the colonies around 1600. If you find this interesting you will love reading the history of eggnog on the internet.
the earlier person's answer is way off.
