I assume you are referring to the "Great Schism" when Michael Cerularius, the Patriarch of Constantinople accused the Western Church (now the Roman Catholic Church) with certain errors. Pope Leo IX sent legates to Constantinople but discussions failed. On July 16, 1054, the papal legates served a decree of excommunication on the Patriarch of Constantinople and his followers. The Patriarch retaliated in kind four days later. The consequences of this first great schism in Christianity were:

(1) A reduction in their respective spheres of influence
and a limitation in their respective fields of concern. The Church in the West, now the Roman Catholic Church, had, for its sphere of influence, Western Europe and the British Isles. The Church in the East, now the Greek Orthodox Church, had, in the 9th and 10th centuries, won over Bulgaria and Russia to the faith of Constantinople. Its sphere of influence, therefore, was contained in Central and Eastern Europe. After the schism each party rarely ventured in the sphere of influence of the other.

(2) The schism shut out the Church in the East from the
dynamic intellectual and cultural forces at work in the West. The Renaissance and the Reformation, which strengthened the Church in the West, never reached the East. As a result, the Eastern Church gradually stagnated; became backward-looking, instead of forward-looking. It was an unspeakable tragedy.

katie, you really need to pick up a history book and do your own school work. If you won't read the history, at least google it instead of searching for quick (and quite possibly very wrong) answers on some web forum.
