She has fairly coarse, very curly, unruly hair.

I do not want a heat protectant that is oily, as it makes her hair look dirty and weighs her hair down.

HELP

Proper conditioning after the shampoo is the first line of defense, the second is leave in conditioner. You will also want to find a stylist familiar with her hair type, she can put her on a deep conditioning regimen in the salon. Depending on how often you flat iron it, you will want to make sure you get it trimmed more often.

Depending on her age, you may want to consider adding a light oil to her natural hair, letting it air dry in 4-5 large plaits, afterwards simply blow dry it out with a comb attachment.
In a few weeks, you will notice that coarse, very curly, unruly hair can be tamed very easily with any type of heat. The younger she is, the less she will care about her hair (unless you put it on her mind). Save all of the work for a time when it counts for her self esteem.
Just remember your level of experience and any type of heat means better professional products and more trips to the salon for professional care. Kudos for not letting your child look all wild about the head like the majority of biracial kids.

I like Umberto leave-in conditioner - you can find it at Target.
