Its just tradition that the fathers name is used - breaking with tradition annoys a lot of people as it's going against our cultural heritage. Just do what you want to do we live in modern times now they can jump in a lake if they don't like it!

Nothing is wrong with a child having the mother's last name. Why do you ask?

There is nothing wrong with it. My daughter has my last name, I was not married to her father when she was born, and I explained it to him that I did not want my daughter to have a different last name from her mother, since I am the primary care take, and also have sole physical and legal custody. It's a personal choice.

Nothing. If you are not married or you prefer one name over the other I see no issues with it.

However, if you are married and have taken on the last name of your husband it's likely he doesn't want to have to go explaining why his own child doesn't have his last name, the child may not feel like a part of the family.

I could look at this question in two ways. The first where the baby is named first name, middle name and the mother's last name or first name, the mother's last name as a middle name and father's last name or mother's last name as a first name, middle name and father's last name. Either way it's up to the individual as to how they want to do it, the common custom being when said indivdual is married the father's name usually applies.

Nothing, some cultures use the mothers name and some hyphenate the name.

absolutely nothing. It doesn't follow tradition, but nothing WRONG with that. I'm just getting divorced (got married after my kids were born, so I didn't really have to give them their dad's last name, just shoce to), and man I wish I had've given my kids my last name.

Nothing... Especially if the mans last name is something like Wiener.

Nothing at all. But Mom should ask herself how she would feel in the future, if as an adult the child decides to have it legally changed.
